Almost a thousand people gathered during the groundbreaking ceremony held last April 26, 2012 for the construction of the Ormoc City Track and Field Oval.
Cong. Lucy Torres-Gomez of the Fourth District of Leyte together with her Chief-of-Staff and husband, Actor Richard Gomez, led the auspicious ceremony dedicated to the Filipino Youth and to Sports Development.
“We must inculcate in the minds of the Filipino Youth the importance of sports, for it strengthens them physically, makes them sharper thinkers, and promotes values-formation and brotherhood among them. The construction of the Ormoc City Track and Field Oval will attract the Filipino Youth in Leyte to start participating in activities like Sports Competitions or even just learning a new fitness hobby.” Cong. Lucy said.
“I would like to thank my husband, Richard, because his genuine love for sports and his untiring efforts infollowing-up requests in Congress,
gave way to produce the funding for this project” she added.
Mr. Richard Gomez, a well-known Fencing Athlete and Gold-Medalist in the Southeast Asian Games was very happy with the number of attendees in the groundbreaking ceremony which included Philippine Sports Commission Comm. Jolly Gomez, Ormoc City Councilor Vince Rama, Dr. Sol Lomarda of DEPED, District Engineer Lino F. Gonzales, Asst. District Engineer Irwin Antonio, B/Capt. Angelito Bernales (Brgy 25), B/Capt. Edgardo Paredes (Brgy 18), B/Capt. Nimfa Rafuli (Brgy 29), B/Capt. Circiaco Tolibao III (Brgy 26), and Members of the 802nd Infantry Brigade and of the Serbisyong Gomez Womens Organization.
“When the Youth sees a modern rubberized Track & Field Oval in Ormoc City, they’ll be inspired to participate, train, achieve more, & stand as Filipino Leaders,” Mr. Gomez said.
